Don’t hire a filmmaker at your wedding
It’s not the same thing for your wedding caterer to run out of top-quality
jamón…
as it is for your videographer to be too busy playing with their gadgets to
actually capture what matters.
Yeah, those little gadgets they carry around.
That make them look like a damn Transformer.
Because if they’re not strapped with a stabilizer, follow focus, gimbal, rig,
external monitor,
and a couple of dangling LED lights…
apparently, they’re not “Filmmakers.”
And there they are.
Buzzing around the couple like flies at a barbecue.
Adjusting the frame.
Tweaking the angle.
Following their mental script of “epic shots.”
Then, when you finally watch your wedding film…
Sure, it’s got crazy smooth camera movements.
But it feels empty.
Like a catalog of staged, lifeless shots.
It’s not the same thing for the flowers to wilt too soon…
as it is for your videographer to be yet another copy of whatever’s trending
on Instagram.
Lost in the influencer jungle.
And you know the worst part?
You won’t realize what they missed until it’s too late.
You’ll watch your video, and yeah… it’ll be pretty.
Very modern.
But…
But…
If it doesn’t hit you in the gut.
If it doesn’t move you.
Something was wasted.
And there’s no going back.
I learned this the hard way.
There was a time when I, too, was buried under a mountain of gear.
We called it “Wedding Cinematography.” (HA!)
Until one day…
I was setting up the perfect shot of the bride’s bouquet.
And in that moment… her father walked in.
She saw him.
They hugged.
They cried.
They felt everything.
And me?
Holding my stupid stabilizer, looking like an idiot.
I missed it.
(Bravo, genius.)
That was the day I realized: Moments don’t wait for you to set up your gear.
Since then, I ditched the excess.
I shoot handheld. Light. Fast.
More alert than Edward Scissorhands delivering a baby.
Because in this business, I learned the hard way:
LESS. IS. MORE.
